The aftermath of the recent heavy rainfall and consequent flooding has left our trails with extensive damage that call for immediate attention.
The full assessment was conducted by the FatTracks committee on Saturday 26 October. Trails, bridges, and gabions have been heavily affected.
Sadly, six bridges have been washed away, and sections of the trails are washed out, presenting a high risk of accidents to riders. The section from 3rd Avenue to pump house is particularly bad with the first river crossing covered by an uprooted tree and damaged bridge.
We have already started repair work, but the efforts may not be enough to restore the trails to what it was any time soon.
According to weather reports, more rain is expected for three days as from Monday 28 October, which will undoubtedly worsen the current situation.
Some trail sections have dangerous ruts that could cause serious injury to anyone who attempts to use them without utmost caution. It’s paramount that everyone heeds this warning to avoid accidents that could result in serious injuries.
We urge riders to avoid using the most affected trails until they have been fully repaired and declared safe for use.
The safety and well-being of everyone who uses the trails remains a top priority.
Avoid:
We believe that together, we can restore the trails to what they were before the floods. However, the repairs require significant resources, including equipment, manpower and materials. We are, therefore, seeking assistance from club members.
We will soon post a list of what we need, and we hope that club members will be willing to contribute in any way they can.
Please keep a lookout on communication channels for more info and reach out to pieter@fattracks.co.za if you are able to assist in any way.
