Hi

We haven’t sent out a newsletter for a while and it’s a matter of time flies and so much to do! Not to mention, its winter and the days are shorter and less time to ride my bike, so it’s a bit grim this time of year!

Well let’s cheer up; shortest day of 2017 was already on 21 June so we now think about spring arriving in one month’s time!

Members / Fatties

Member numbers have really taken off this year and we now stand on 704 active paid up ‘Fatties’... WOW!

We just introduced pro-rata rates for the balance of the year till 31 Jan 2018 so talk to your mates and tell them to join and in doing so helping us to develop and maintain our beautiful Baakens Valley Trails and others.

Pro-rata rates (categories as per definition on FT Website):

  • Main member - R240
  • Spouse – R110
  • Dependent – R80
  • Family – R450
  • Pensioner – R180
  • Pensioner Spouse – R80

You will still receive a 2017 Bike Board and Membership Card.

Baakens Valley and Partner Trails

The Baakens Valley is still our prime focus as it is on our doorstep; it is non-technical riding and can be technical if you choose so. Andrew Rist and our Trails Crew are doing a sterling job to develop and maintain these trails for us to enjoy.

We are currently working flat-out with Stakeholders PE Metro, Metro Police, Horse unit etc to make the Baakens Valley safe and...

WE URGE YOU TO NOT RIDE ALONE! RATHER MAKE OR JOIN A GROUP. WE HAVE NEVER HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE THERE ARE TWO OR MORE RIDERS!

We are about to start to remark the trails with newly designed Trail Markers and the Conti Loop, 60MOM and general trails will soon be easy to follow so you know where you are going and won’t ‘get lost’.

Fattracks Trails...

  • Norm Hudlin Fattracks Trails

Still a family beauty! Safe, flat and good riding surface for beginners. Don’t be fooled; ride it as hard as you can and you will have a proper workout! Fatties ride free (with a bike board) but you still have to register at the start.

  • Fattracks Baywest MTB Trails

A new addition to the Fattracks trails network with good facilities and a different shopping experience start / finish. Much like FT Norm Hudlin riding but still a bit raw and harder to ride. We are working towards linking up NH with BW and that should happen soon. There is a QR code at the start for FT donations but Fatties with Bike Boards on their bikes, ride for free.

  • Fattracks PEGC MTB Trails

Central, accessible, safe and non-technical. The FT Trails teams have started with grooming work on the trail and you will start seeing berms and the odd hump to jump. Lovely ride and good workout if you burn it. Look out for walkers and joggers and be polite and considerate. Fatties with Bike Boards on their bikes, ride for free.

  • 3Rivers / Crossways Trails

Great new partner trail for Fattracks Members. Beautiful riding on all levels and a nice day out to Crossways Country Kitchen for a Family breakfast or lunch. The trails are well marked and the obvious place to start is Crossways. Fatties don’t pay but you have to register (preferably with the smart phone app) that you can save on the home screen of your cell.

ON ALL THESE TRAILS PLEASE RIDE WITH YOUR BIKE BOARD ON YOUR BIKE!

NOT ONLY DO WE IDENTIFY OURSELVES WITH LAND OWNERS AND FELLOW FATTIES BUT ALSO WE PROMOTE OUR SPONSORS CONTINENTAL TYRE WHO PUT IN HUGE MONEY AND SUPPORT TOWARDS OUR CLUB.

  • No Helmet No Ride!
  • No Bike Board No Free Ride!
  • Ride within your limits!
  • Check your equipment regularly!

Tell someone where you are going & what approx. time you will be back!

Benefits

The BIGGEST benefit to being a member of Fattracks is that you have safe and accessible trails to ride. Members make it possible for us to develop and maintain trails and also to partner with other trails for members to ride there free. You can say that I don’t HAVE to be a member to ride in the Baakens Valley and that is true BUT make your humble contribution to the costs of developing and maintaining and just join the club and ride with your Bike Board!!

Look at our other benefits on the website and make use of them by showing your membership card.

A much underrated benefit is the BestDrive connection through Conti. At their facility in William Moffett Drive you get massive discounts as FT Members when you want to do a safety check, balance wheels, alignment checks etc for your car.

Also like our FB Page ‘Fattracks MTB Club’ to keep up to speed with new offerings!

Thule Store 3rd Ave Walmer

We have made an arrangement with Harry at Thule to act as a FT merchandise outlet and collection point for bike boards etc.

Support them where you can as they do a lot for our lovely sport MTB’ing!

Pop in there and see what we have for members; Cycling Shirts, T Shirts, FT Mohair socks, Buffs etc.

WhatsApp groups

You can love it you can hate it but you cannot ignore it!! It’s here to stay.

We have at the moment 3 groups of which one is a Broadcast group. Total members on all the groups = 481

WhatsApp only allow 256 people on a group so we have the FT1 and FT2 groups and the the Broadcast group.

If I look at other groups that I belong to we Fatties are actually quite ‘civilized’ in terms of chatting. We add every new member to a FT1 or FT2 group and if they leave the group we add them to the Broadcast group. On the Broadcast group you just receive ‘formal’ notifications and cannot see or participate in any ‘chatting’.

If we missed you and you want to be on a group send me a personal message to Johan 0823313688.
